Description: Develop confidence in your voice! This course is an entry level class designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of communication. It aims to make students not only better communicators, but also help them develop their own voice and perspective. We will tackle those pesky nerves using fun games and give the students strategies for overcoming their fears. For those that are already outgoing, we will focus all that energy and give the students tools for honing their communications skills- turning them excellent speakers!

Description: This course is for middle-school aged youth who have received little (one year or less) or no public speaking instruction.

Students will learn the basics of speech organization, eye contact, vocal variety, listening, memorization, feedback, and hand gestures.

Students are given an introduction to what it takes to be an effective communicator and leader. They are also given practical experience by presenting during every class.

Description: This course is for middle-school aged youth who have taken the Middle School Public Speech 1 taught or a summer course by Eric Winger. Students will dig deeper into speaking skills they have already learned to help them become more effective communicators.

In addition, new topics will be introduced - speech writing, transitions, stage usage, how to be memorable, use of props and PowerPoint. We will also delve into the structure of TED Talks and why they have become so popular. Students will give a prepared speech during every class.

Description: This course is for middle-school aged youth who have taken the MIT Middle 1 and 2 Speech courses taught by Eric Winger. Students will take a deep dive into public speaking by discovering the power of humor, presenting technical information, and handling Q&A from an audience.

They will also learn more about communicating on video, enhance their voice and body communication, and receive deeper instruction on giving feedback. In addition, students will continue to receive many opportunities to practice public speaking in order to review and refine skills they have learned in earlier classes.

Description: The Middle School Public Debate Program is the world's largest initiative for class and contest debating. Specifically designed to meet the needs of students in the middle grades (ages 10-14). We are committed to sound pedagogy, rigorous practice, accessible materials and meaningful community service.

Working with an experienced coaching, judging and advising team, we will accept 18 middle school students to form 6 debating groups to participate 12 classes (including training classes and tournaments).

Developmentally Appropriate - A debate format and competition process designed with experienced teachers for middle school students.

Backwards Design - Created with the specific academic and socio-emotional needs of young adolescents in mind.

Textbook Supported - In addition to free online resources, teachers and students can go in-depth to explore complex issues.

Standards Aligned - Materials and practices designed to fit current reading, speaking and listening standards.

Open Participation - Students may participate regardless of school type or location across grades 5-8.

Quality Control - Tournaments follow standardized procedures, including judge training and certification.
